The other night, I was sitting in my feelings. Someone’s words cut deep, and I found myself replaying the hurt on a loop. My first instinct is always to shut the world out and sit in isolation.
And for a moment, that felt safe.
But then, something shifted. My son walked into the room, wrapped his arms around me, and sang his off-key version of “Everything is going to be all right.” I laughed through the tears, and in that moment I realized, connection is what brings us back to ourselves.
Isolation has its place. It gives us space to reflect, to think, to create. Writers, especially, need that solitude to listen to our characters and explore our stories. But here’s the truth: writing isn’t a solo journey.
Every book, every blog, every story finds its life when it’s shared. We need readers, critique partners, editors, and cheerleaders. We need each other.
That reminder came to me again as I thought about the writing groups I’ve joined, the coaches who’ve guided me, and the friends who remind me I’m not crazy for chasing this dream. Those connections keep me moving when resistance tries to hold me back.
So if you’ve been isolating yourself, maybe it’s time to reach out. Email a writing buddy. Join a local Meetup. Or even reply to this letter. I’d love to hear how your journey is going.
Because yes, solitude is good for the soul. But connection? That’s what keeps us on the journey.
Here’s to walking this path together.
